Background: These photographs are of the international effort to repatriate Hutu refugees that fled fighting in their camps near the Rwandan border in late 1996 and early 1997. This group of 80,000 refugees walked more than 700 km into the jungles of Zaire. Thousands died on this journey, the lucky ones were eventually flown back to Rwanda.
