Alexia 2014 Women’s Initiative grantee Mary F. Calvert won this year’s prestigious Cliff Edom’s “New American Award” from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Best of Photojournalism Contest for 2015. Her winning project “‘The Battle Within: Sexual Assault in America’s Military’ tells the story of women who join the U.S. Armed Forces and who are being raped and sexually assaulted by their colleagues in record numbers.”

The NPPA Cliff Edom Award “recognizes an individual in the tradition of Cliff Edom to inspire and motivate members of the photojournalism community to reach new heights.”

The award is named for Clifton C. “Cliff” Edom, regarded by some as the “father of photojournalism” because of his teaching efforts at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He also established what is now the Pictures of the Year International contest in 1947.

Calvert also recently received Photographer of the Year Runner-Up in the 2015 Northern Short Course contest, announced at the annual conference of the same name put on by the NPPA.

We are proud to be able to support Calvert in the next stage of her project. With the support of the Alexia Foundation Women’s Initiative Grant, Calvert is currently documenting the homelessness of female veterans, which many times is the outcome of sexual abuse in the military.
