For Kelly Creedon, a 2015 Award of Excellence Winner, the Master Class was a time to explore the theory and methodology of MediaStorm’s unique documentary style and approach.

“For me, I think the most valuable lessons from the workshop were the behind-the-scenes insights into the process of making some of the MediaStorm pieces,” said Creedon. “While I had already seen many of the final products, it was so enlightening to understand the many challenges and hard choices that went into forming the polished pieces.” Continue reading

That work has now been published as part of a major article by National Geographic.

“The idea is to show myth and imagination that exists within it,” Elkaim explains to the magazine. By making these people and this place visible to the wider world, Elkaim helps us all understand what will be lost when this complex is finished. Continue reading

It is the largest festival of photography in New Zealand.

“My goal was to show the importance and depth of serious documentary work that needs to be done, needs to be shown and exposed, and these projects and many, many others were done with the support of The Alexia Foundation,” explained Dooley on the Auckland Festival was something he thought The Alexia Foundation should participate in. The Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award celebrates women photographers whose work demonstrates bravery, dedication and skill.

Photographer Sarah Blesener captured the camaraderie among the students in her series,” The Guardian tells us.

According to Blesener, it was early reception to her published work from Russia that compelled her to turn her lens on the U.S.

"There’s nothing crazy that’s happening there that’s not happening here. It’s the same kind of dialogue… If we do it here, it’s just called patriotism. If they do it in Russia, it’s called nationalism,” Blesener explained in her recent PhotoWings interview. Continue reading

With the guidance of Momenta, José beautifully told the story of Under The Bridges and On The Streets, a non-profit serving the homeless in the Los Angeles County.

“I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the Momenta Workshop. It was an incredible learning experience that pushed me to be the best I could physically and creatively be in a short period of time,” said José about the experience. Continue reading

We have proudly funded student and professional photographers for more than 27 years.

One of those students was Souvid Datta who received a student Award of Excellence Grant in 2013. The grant was $500 in cash and up to $1,500 to attend an educational workshop. Through a series of recent developments Mr. Datta has admitted that he manipulated many photographic images and that he stole images from other photographers and incorporated them into his own.

The founders and the board of directors of the Alexia Foundation have removed Mr. Datta's images from the foundation's website and they will not be reposted. Continue reading

After being halted by indigenous protests and international outcry in the late 80's it was redesigned and pushed through with construction beginning in 2012 amidst renewed protest.

Today the dam is mostly complete blocking the unique environment of a part of the Xingu known as the Big Bend. Numerous indigenous tribes and riverine communities in the region have been impacted and one third of the city of Altamira has been permanently flooded by the nearby Belo Monte Dam displacing over 20,000 people.

He is responsible for some of the most important photo editing of our time and has led some of the most important photography teams journalism has ever assembled.

Mike currently holds the Alexia Tsairis Chair for Documentary Photography at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He teaches advanced storytelling classes, runs the Alexia Foundation Grants competition and creates special initiatives while continuing to work with photographers the world over as a picture editor.

For Latin America: Stories That Drive Change, Mike will be explaining what grants are available and how to successfully apply for them based on his extensive experience administering The Alexia grants, as a jury member for a variety of grants and as a photo editor, who has guided numerous photographers to success. In his break-out session, he will be discussing how to select and sequence images for maximum impact, achieving the third effect that results from the successful interplay of two images.

Maxon won The Alexia 2012 professional grant for "When the Spirit Moves." He was also the recipient of The Alexia 2008 student runner-up grant. Continue reading
