Over the summer, Camillo Pasquarelli, one of the recipients of The Alexia 2017 Award of Excellence grant, used his prize to attend The Kalish Workshop.

For Pasquarelli, The Kalish allowed him to understand what working in a newsroom is like, taught him how to better interact with his photo editors, showed him the power of working together to push the boundaries of storytelling and introduced him to new colleagues with whom he is excited to work. The contest is open for photographers aged 18 to 33. It aims to promote young photographers and support them in their strive for professional perfection. Khan was awarded a 3rd place prize in the Portrait. Hero of Our Time category and was also recognized with a Special prize from Al Mayadeen TV.

"Fallen Stars" explores the issue of child labor in Bangladesh where, Khan tells us, child labor is a visible part of everyday life. Employers often prefer to employ children because they are cheaper and considered to be more compliant and obedient than adults. They are also exposed to situations that make them vulnerable to trafficking, abuse, violence and exploitation. Continue reading

It launched as part of Reel South, a PBS program that features acclaimed documentary films about the American South, and as a Vimeo Staff Pick, a select group of videos that the streaming service’s staff “really, really love.” The film had already been screened at twenty major film festivals throughout the U.S., has won a number of major awards, and was named Worth Watching #156 by MediaStorm’s Eric Maierson this week.

“In This World,” tells the story of Courvosier “Vosiey” Cox, a precocious 15-year-old boy. He is determined to make it in show business as a way to leave behind his poverty and take care of his family. Creedon received an Alexia Award of Excellence Grant in 2015 in support of this work.

That work has now been published as part of a major article by National Geographic.

“The idea is to show myth and imagination that exists within it,” Elkaim explains to the magazine. By making these people and this place visible to the wider world, Elkaim helps us all understand what will be lost when this complex is finished. Continue reading

Photographer Sarah Blesener captured the camaraderie among the students in her series,” The Guardian tells us.

According to Blesener, it was early reception to her published work from Russia that compelled her to turn her lens on the U.S.

With the guidance of Momenta, José beautifully told the story of Under The Bridges and On The Streets, a non-profit serving the homeless in the Los Angeles County.

“I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the Momenta Workshop. It was an incredible learning experience that pushed me to be the best I could physically and creatively be in a short period of time,” said José about the experience. Continue reading

The festival, which runs from June 1-June 24, is a citywide contemporary art and cultural event which takes place within Auckland, New Zealand’s major galleries, project spaces, non-gallery venues and public sites. Its purpose is to further the presence and awareness of photography.

At the festival, Alexia Executive Administrator James Dooley will be discussing The Alexia Foundation's work, reviewing portfolios, and participating in a panel discussion on culture and identity in photography. Continue reading

We have proudly funded student and professional photographers for more than 27 years.

One of those students was Souvid Datta who received a student Award of Excellence Grant in 2013. The grant was $500 in cash and up to $1,500 to attend an educational workshop. Through a series of recent developments Mr. Datta has admitted that he manipulated many photographic images and that he stole images from other photographers and incorporated them into his own.

The founders and the board of directors of the Alexia Foundation have removed Mr. Datta's images from the foundation's website and they will not be reposted. Continue reading
