These weekend, we concluded the judging for The Alexia grant for the 27th year. As is tradition, co-founder Aphrodite Tsairis closed the competition with her thoughts on the process. We wanted to share her moving and perceptive remarks with you…

“Each year we learn through this competition that photography is more than a means of expression; it is a different way of seeing, one that treats each moment as something irreplaceable.

Each photographer’s work we viewed today whether they were students or professionals – each one was, in the words of the great Alfred Eisenstaedt, struggling ‘to find and catch the storytelling moment.'” Continue reading

“When the Spirit Moves” Wins World Press Photo First Prize

Justin Maxon has been awarded first prize in the Long Form category of the 2017 World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest for “When the Spirit Moves,” his long-term project on gun violence in Chester, Pa., a small American city.

Maxon won The Alexia 2012 professional grant for “When the Spirit Moves.” He was also the recipient of The Alexia 2008 student runner-up grant. Continue reading

Nathaniel Brunt’s #shaheed at Toronto’s CONTACT Gallery

With an opening reception tonight, Feb. 9, Nathaniel Brunt’s #shaheed will be on display in a solo exhibition at the Scotiabank CONTACT gallery in Torono, Canada until Mar. 25. #shaheed is a study of the war in Kashmir, the men fighting in it, and the changing relationship between technology and the representation of conflict.

Nathaniel Brunt was The Alexia 2016 student winner for #shaheed. His Alexia grant helped support this important work. Continue reading
