Each year, student recipients are given the opportunity to attend one of three given workshops in addition to their $500 cash grant. Over the summer, Camillo Pasquarelli, one of the recipients of The Alexia 2017 Award of Excellence grant, used his prize to attend The Kalish Workshop.
For Pasquarelli, The Kalish allowed him to understand what working in a newsroom is like, taught him how to better interact with his photo editors, showed him the power of working together to push the boundaries of storytelling and introduced him to new colleagues with whom he is excited to work. Each year, winners of The Alexia student award of excellence grant are given $1500 to be used on an educational experience from a number of choices. 2016 student AE winner José Marquéz used his funding to attend The Momenta Project Los Angeles 2017, a five-day workshop where each attendee documents the mission of a local non-profit.
With the guidance of Momenta, José beautifully told the story of Under The Bridges and On The Streets, a non-profit serving the homeless in the Los Angeles County.
“I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the Momenta Workshop. It was an incredible learning experience that pushed me to be the best I could physically and creatively be in a short period of time,” said José about the experience. Continue reading →
The Alexia Foundation produced the first workshop seminar of its kind, “Photography: Agent for Change,” graciously hosted by the International Center of Photography in New York on November 6, 2015.
