"Eyes on the World" exhibition now at UN Centre in Japan
The United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo, Japan, is hosting "Eyes on the World," the Alexia Foundation photo exhibit celebrating the 15th anniversary of the foundation.
This exhibition was first held in the Main Gallery of the General Assembly Visitors' Lobby at the United Nations Headquarters in March, 2006.
It is scheduled to show in Tokyo from Monday, Feb. 26, to Friday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.
A second printing of the show also is currently hanging in the lobby of the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. That show was hung during the Alexia Week activities from Feb. 19 - 24. John Long, National Press Photographers Association Ethics Chairman and adjunct professor of picture editing at Syracuse, spoke to students on photojournalism ethics in a digital age; Michele Stephenson, recently retired Time Magazine director of photography, spoke on Time Magazine style - present and future; and Dudley Brooks, AME/photo for the Baltimore Sun spoke about the picture story in multi-media days. The professional and student competition was judged on Feb. 24.
The Alexia Competition, held annually under the auspices of Syracuse University, awards grants to photojournalists whose work gives insight into cultural differences. Since its inception in 1991, the Alexia Foundation has supported the work of student and professional photojournalists whose compelling visual narratives demonstrate the power of documentary photography. To date, grants have been awarded to 85 undergraduate photographers and 12 professionals.
Concurrent with the exhibit in 2006, the foundation released a commemorative book, "Eyes on the World," highlighting selected photographs by Alexia Competition winners. The book will be available for purchase at the Tokyo UN Gallery or through the Alexia Foundation website.

The Alexia Foundation's "Eyes on the World" book displays the work of 18 past Alexia grant winners and presents work that has been exhibited at the United Nations building in New York, at the Pingyao, China, International Photography Festival, and at the UN Information Centre in Tokyo.
